Today I’m going to write about a very special friend of mine, whose determination managed to turn reality into a dream.
Michal is one of the nicest people I know. He’s younger than me, yet there are so many things I could learn from him. I guess it’s not a reason for me to be proud, but hey, this post is not about me!
I met him 3 years ago, and, to be honest I wasn’t very fond of him in the beginning. Let’s make one thing clear though, when I say beginning I mean 10 minutes or even less. I thought he was distant and jaded, but I couldn’t have been more wrong. When we started talking about the best drummers in the world, I just knew he was a man after my own heart.
He worked for many various companies but whatever he did for them, he never felt satisfied. All that he really wanted was the money to buy new drums. When he gathered most important parts and build his dream set, he turned a small room in the basement into a “workplace”. That’s when he decided to put all eggs in one basket, quit his job and began playing drums for over 8 hours every day. He just knew that being a musician was the only thing he wanted to do in life and nothing, even the lack of savings, wouldn’t stop him. He recorded a few short videos of him playing, put an add about giving lessons on YouTube, found students, with whom he could share his great passion, and, at the same time, earn some money that he really needed to buy some great cymbals. It lasted for many years, he played with some local bands, gave lessons and he devoted himself in playing like there was no tomorrow. What he knew was that only hard work and many sacrifices would bring the breakthrough.
The great offer
Determined and eager to act, Michal continued playing with different bands, he even went to studios with some of them, which made him feel certain that the choice he had made was a good one. Then came this offer that really changed his life. One of the most important Polish bands, Decapitated, asked him to join the group. That’s when all his friends, including me, became alarmed, as Michal, still not confident enough, wanted to throw away the opportunity saying he wasn’t good enough. I think it took a few weeks and endless conversations with everybody he knew, before he came to his senses and decided to give it a try. He went to Krakow, took part in many rehearsals and became a member of the band. So here’s the right moment to thank guys from Decapitated for being so patient. ;-)
Dreams do come true
I’m not going to tell you that everything was perfect from the very beginning, Michal found out new things about playing, had to learn some new techniques, but that didn’t turn him off. On the contrary, it gave him even more motivation to develop his skills, which resulted in him spending 20 hours a day playing in his basement.
And where is Michal now? On the tour in the USA! Is he happy now? You bet!
Good luck guys!!
